Regional Customs  Beijing

On the Dragon Boat Festival, it is a taboo in Beijing to fetch water from a well, because the water might be poisonous. Therefore, people fetch water on the day before the festival. Vendors hawk cherries and mulberries, as people believe that eating these two fruits can prevent the unconscious consumption of flies throughout the year. All food stores sell the 芒鈧揊ive-Poison Cake,芒鈧?a rose pie on which the images of the five most poisonous insects (namely, scorpion, frog, spider, centipede, and snake) are inscribed.
