There are 409 acupuncture points which are commonly used in the 14 meridians. Points are mostly located between tendons, bones and muscles, pertaining to the 14 meridians respectively.
Points can be used to treat diseases and keep good health by removing obstruction in the Jingluo, regulating Qi and blood, reinforcing the deficiency and reducing the excess. They possess the functions in treating immediate and remote, local and general disorders of the body. Therefore, it is not necessary that acupuncture points are close to the part of the body where the problem is experienced. For example, although you may suffer from headaches, needles may be inserted in your foot or hand.
Each point has its local function, for instance points on the abdominal region can be used to treat diseases of internal organs.
Besides the local functions many points have their remote functions. For example Neiguan on the forearm, can be used to treat disorders of the chest, heart and stomach.
In addition, some points have the function for treating systemic disorders, e.g. Dazhui can be punctured to treat common cold and fever.
Anatomical landmarks, proportional measurement and finger measurement are the three methods in locating points. Skilful and accurate location of points enhances directly the clinical effect and in many cases, is crucial and essential for achieving desired effect.
